Anne Harte

At 7pm, Anne Harte, our local historian will talk about Margaret Mac Curtain – A Woman Ahead of Her Time. Margaret, Sr Ben as she was also known, was a lecturer in the Irish History Department of University College Dublin from 1964 to 1994, professor at the School of Irish Studies, Dublin, held the Burns Chair of Irish Studies at Boston College from 1992 to 1993. She was awarded the Eire Society of Boston Gold Medal in 1993 for her writings on Irish women’s history. When she initially became a nun, she was given the name Sister Benvenuta but she restored her own name when rule changes allowed it.

Anne is a native of Donegal who has lived in Dublin since the mid 1970s. She is a graduate of TCD, graduating with an Honours degree in History and Political Science. Anne has provided history courses for older adults for many years in Terenure Enterprise Centre and continues to provide such courses..

Dr. Antonia Hart

And, at 8pm, our Dublin City Historian, Dr Antonia Hart, will tell us how “’She knew the business well’. The Dublin City Historians in Residence programme is created by Dublin City Libraries and is delivered by Dublin City Council Culture Company. Antonia Hart will examine the lives of women in business in 19th and early 20th century Dublin, including a number who lived and worked in Harold’s Cross, Rathmines, Rathgar, and Terenure.

Family History – where to start? Would you like to know more about your family history but don’t know how to go about it? There is so much information available now compared to a few years ago. This talk will tell you how to get started and will focus on what can be done at no cost and from your own home.

Poetry Evening – Thursday 21st – at 7:30

Join us for an evening of Poetry and Music in Harold’s Cross Community Centre, from 7.30 to 9.30 on Thursday 21 May 2006.

Writer Amanda Bell will introduce readings by local poets – some festival regulars, some new faces: Alvy Carragher, Catherine Ann Cullen, Gilles Fabre, Michael O’Loughlin, Roisin Sheerin, and Gerard Smyth.

Celebration of St Charles of Mount Argus

A weekend celebration of St Charles of Mount Argus (1821-1893). St Charles is the only canonised saint who died in Ireland and whose entire, intact remains are buried within an Irish Church. His reputation for healings and miracles was so great at the time that a reference is made to him in the famous novel Ulysses by James Joyce.

St Charles is a saint for the poor, the sick, the sinner – a saint for immigrants and emigrants – a saint for everyone!

Saturday 24th May, 11am

Annual St Charles Mass for the Sick with Sacrament of Anointing with the Relic.

Sunday 25th May, 12 noon to 3.30pm  

Blessing with the Relic of St Charles after the 11am mass. Afterwards there will be a Presentation on St Charles in the St Charles Centre which will be open from 12 noon to 3.30pm This is an opportunity for people to learn about St Charles by watching and listening to a Presentation and by visiting the shrine. There will also be an opportunity for people to buy items such as candles, keyrings etc.

Sunday the 24th Eoin Bairéad Walking Tour

And on Sunday, at 12 noon, Eoin Bairéad will lead the now traditional historic walk of Harold’s Cross. Using the Harold’s Cross Walking Trail Map & Guide (a copy of which will be provided, we will trace the history of the village from the very beginning to today. The walk starts at the Canal Bridge – the Robert Emmet Bridge and finishes in the Park about 1:30. Wear sensible shoes and bring rain gear!
